2011 Lecture Series: "Endodontic Diagnosis and Treatment Update"

Ths USDGA is an Approved PACE/AGD Program Provider.

The formal continuing education programs of this program provider are accepted by AGD for Fellowship, Mastership and membership maintenance credit.

The 2011 meeting will provide 20 hours of Continuing Education Lecture Credits.

The current term of approval extends from June 1, 2006 to May 31, 2012.

Presenter: J. Craig Baumgartner, DDS, PhD

Course Description:
An improved understanding of biological principles and the recent convergence of improved instruments, materials and techniques have revolutionized the practice of endodontics. Participants in this information packed course will enhance their knowledge of endodontic diagnosis & treatment planning, cleaning & shaping, filling of the root canal system, and treatment of endodontic infections.

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of the program, the participant should be able to:

  • Make dependable pulpal and periapical diagnosis including “cracked teeth”
  • Differentiate fistulas, gum boils, and sinus tracts
  • Understand the important aspects of profound anesthesia
  • Determine the endodontic degree of difficulty – find your “comfort zone”
  • Determine an accurate working length.
  • Be familiar with the advantages if magnification & illumination for endodontics
  • Discuss the advantages of files of greater taper (.04, .06) - hand vs. rotary NiTi.
  • Choose the best irrigants (NaOCl, EDTA, MTAD, CHX, Q-Mix) to clean the canal system
  • Be familiar with the advantages of the OHSU Crown-Down Continuous-Taper
  • Describe how to fill root canal systems with gutta-percha or Resilon
  • Describe the use of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) for perforations, barriers, pulpotomies
  • Describe treatment of traumatic dental Injuries
  • Describe effective management of endodontic infections
  • Discuss a hierarchy of analgesics and antibiotics (bugs & drugs) for supportive therapy

About the Presenter:
J. Craig Baumgartner received a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin, a DDS from the University of Minnesota, an MS in Oral Biology from George Washington University and a PhD in Microbiology/Immunology from the University of Maryland. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and is Past President and Director of the American Board of Endodontics.  He previously was Chief of Microbiology and Director - Advanced Education Program in Endodontics at the United States Army Institute of Dental Research, Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He retired as a Colonel from the US Army after 20 years of service. He was Chairman of the Department of Endodontology and Director - Advanced Education Programs in Endodontics for 18 years and is currently Professor Emeritus, Oregon Health & Science University. He continues to teach part-time at the university and gives presentations nationally and internationally. Dr. Baumgartner’s main research focus was the microorganisms associated with infections of endodontic origin. He published over 100 articles and nine chapters for textbooks. He was co-editor of the 6th Edition of Ingle's Endodontics and on the editorial board of the Journal of Endodontics. He was honored with the prestigious Louis I. Grossman Award for cumulative publication of significant research studies by the American Association of Endodontists at their Annual Meeting in 2010.
