Jason Goode Memorial Scientific Session

2010 Lecture Series: "Clinical Excellence in Operative and Prosthetic Dentistry"

Presenter: Tom Walker, DMD
Associate Clinical Professor, Oregon Health Sciences University, Operative and Prosthetic Dentistry Departments.

  1. How you can recognize OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) patients in your practice
  2. Veneers: not only beautiful, but a tooth saver!
  3. The MOD Invisible Gold Onlay: tricks to make your gold work better
  4. Retirement: Practical advice from those on the other side: Tom & Marvel

Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Fifty to Sixty percent of your patients snore. Twenty-five percent are habitual snorers … many of those having OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). It breaks down to 9% of men and 4% of women, which equals 18 to 25 million Americans and as few as 5% have been diagnosed. You're thinking this only applies to the older generation, but 10 to 12% of normal children snore. What risks to children's health does this statistic imply? More importantly how can YOU affect this groups lives (young and old) … even SAVE A LIFE? After this lecture you should be able to recognize these patients and get those help. If you're not already treating those patients you may decide to get more education in this field.

Veneers
Veneers are being taught in some schools but only on a limited basis. Most of this knowledge is learned once we're in private practice. This course stresses the importance of a good information gathering, good communication with the patient, collaboration with dental specialists, pre-preparation aids, conservative preps, temporaries, final cementation, care by the patient/hygienist and failures. After this lecture you should be able to apply most of it and certainly will come away with a more conservative approach to preparation.

Gold Onlay… Tricks
While this presentation is about producing an MOD gold onlay the emphasis will be on tips to make gold preparations easier and more predictable. These principles can be applied to all of crown and bridge. Implementation can be started the moment you get back to your office.

Retirement
Although most of this is somewhat humorous and shows some interesting places to visit and places to play golf I think there is some real sound advice for those of you thinking about retirement. Even if you are not now thinking about this it is time to plan. Hopefully this will shed some light on what it is like to be retired and pit-falls to avoid. It is a candid presentation.
